   Yangzhou is located in the lower reachers of the Yangtse River,middle of Jiangsu Province,or rather,119��19.1´----119��32.1´east longitude and 32��27.8´ ----32��20.8´north latitude.With a history of more than 2,480 years,it is acknow -ledged to be one of 24 historic and cultural cities authorized by the State Council.

   Yangzhou is one of the municipalities directly under Jiangsu Province.It covers an area of 12,431 square kilometers,the arable area of which is 5,876 square kilometers.It has a river-line of 206 kilometers.The Grand Canal has about 142.3 kilometers through Yangzhou, joining the Baima Lake,the Baoying Lake,the Gaoyou Lake and the Shaobo Lake to the Yangtse total area.They have 29.13% of all the river-line.The rivers and lakes have an area of 2,400 square kilometers.

    In 1995,Yangzhou's total output value in agriculture and industry was 115.4 billion yuan and its total domestic production value,62.5 billion yuan for which Yangzhou stands the third in Jiangsu Province.
